Smart packing for lighter, easier travel—without the stress or excess.

10 PACKING TIPS

The PROBLEM

Packing for a trip often feels daunting—too much, not enough, or just not right. The suitcase fills up quickly, yet we end up wearing only a third of what we brought.

It’s not just disorganization—it’s often anxiety around transition. Travel disrupts routine, and we try to compensate with “just-in-case” items that weigh us down.

We’ve all been there. But with the right system, it becomes easier—and lighter.

Let me help.

The PICK

Years of travel have taught me a few simple truths—and they’ve transformed the way I pack.

✦ 1. A 7-day trip is the benchmark

Packing for 10, 14, or even 21 days doesn’t require significantly more than for 7. The essentials don’t scale linearly. Pack with one whole week in mind—and repeat or wash as needed.

✦ 2. Lists prevent chaos

Detailed packing lists prevent forgotten essentials and avoid last-minute add-ins you’ll never use. They also help you stay focused and intentional.

✦ 3. Packing cubes are a game-changer

They make it easy to find anything quickly, and they keep your suitcase from becoming a soft-structured mess by day two.

✦ 4. Plan outfits by day

Write your list with the number of days in mind. Visualize full outfits—even if you repeat garments. Choose versatile shoes that match everything, and never pack shoes you wouldn’t walk in comfortably. You won’t wear them.

✦ 5. Pack for context

Traveling across two climates? Add layers and dedicate a cube for the most diverse climate (e.g., ski or a very hot summer). Have a special event? Bring two outfits and one pair of matching shoes to give yourself comfort and flexibility.

✦ 6. Ditch the “just in case” mindset

Check the weather and pack for what you'll actually use. “Just in case” items tend to take up space and add stress.

✦ 7. What goes in your hand carry

Keep your electronics (they’re heavy), jewelry, and a few key beauty essentials in your carry-on:

  • A hydrating cream for flights.

  • Lip balm.

  • A bright lipstick for arrival—it’s a small trick that instantly lifts a tired face.

  • A book or e-reader.

  • A non-bulky cardigan or wrap for changing temps.

✦ 8. Most destinations have stores

You’re not going to the moon. Toothpaste, sunscreen, and shampoo exist almost everywhere. Let go of the idea that you must be entirely self-reliant.

✦ 9. Always pack a swimsuit

Even on a business trip. You never know when a pool or sauna might appear, and it’s the item people most often regret not bringing.

✦ 10. Jewelry = the finishing touch

Jewelry can transform any outfit, but traditional jewelry cases are bulky and inefficient.
Instead, I store each pair of earrings or necklace in its small plastic sleeve, then place them all in a flat zippered pouch.

It’s light, discreet, and makes every piece easy to find—no tangles, no missing pairs, just the right finishing touch when you need it.

Why am I a last-minute packer?

  • I keep packing lists in the Reminders app, organized by trip type, making it easy to reuse and adapt.

  • I know exactly what to pack, so it takes less than an hour to finish.

  • I often prepare my packing cubes in advance, but leave the suitcase itself for last.

  • I don’t like having an open suitcase at home—it feels like visual noise.

  • Having a repeatable routine makes packing a calm and efficient process.

  • My final check is always the same:
    Passport
    Credit cards
    Phone
Everything else can be replaced at the destination.

Behind the Pick

Years of travel—high and low, with kids and without, across climates and continents—have shaped how I pack. From extended stays to quick trips, I’ve learned through trial, error, and repetition.

My packing isn’t perfect, and I still adjust and improve it with every trip. However, one thing I’ve learned for sure is that packing only what I truly need is incredibly stress-relieving.

This guide is simply what’s worked for me—shared so it might make your next trip a little lighter, too.

TAKEAWAY

Packing doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little structure and intention, it becomes something else entirely: a quiet confidence that you have precisely what you need—and nothing more.

Every trip is an opportunity to refine your routine.

AWAY packing cubes

I love these. They’re lightweight yet structured, making them easy to pack, and soft enough to compress when space is tight.
